Staff Pay

If you employ people, you will need to make sure you comply with the national minimum wage (NMW). Although the NMW applies to the majority of workers there are some exceptions.

As at 1 October 2004, there are three NMW levels:

  • £4.85 per hour for employees aged 22 and over
  • £4.10 per hour for employees aged 18 to 21
  • £3.00 per hour for employees aged 16 and 17 (note that this only applies to 16 year olds who are no longer of compulsory school age).

Full-time employees working a five-day week are also entitled to a minimum of four weeks (20 days) paid annual leave which can include national holidays. Employees working a six-day week are entitled to 24 days paid annual leave.

Even if you have not agreed to pay an employee while they are off sick you may still be obliged by law to pay an employee Statutory Sick Pay after a certain period.
