Silverjet, the business class-only airline, carried a record number of passengers in March, figures show.

Data released by the firm shows that passenger numbers increased by 23 per cent on February's figure.

Lawrence Hunt, chief executive of Silverjet, said: "We are delighted to report another record month of passenger statistics with all three of our daily flights increasing again.

"March gave us our highest ever monthly revenues having achieved over 10,000 revenue seats for the first time."

He added that the fact that the airline's fares are up to 50 per cent less than business class in other airlines is helping to attract an increasing number of customers.

On Friday, the Times reported that the airline has entered into talks, which could result in a takeover deal being agreed for the firm.

According to the paper, a "private equity or financial buyer" could purchase the company and remove it from the stock market in order to concentrate on further improving its performance.
